my affair with Fitteds…

I know it is no secret that I prefer fitteds.  Anyone that is a frequent visitor to my facebook page knows my opinion.  One of my fans is having issues with a used pocket she bought… in trying to help her through it I suggested she change to fitteds.

Today thought I got an email.  She point-blank asked me why I like fitteds.  I don’t know if anyone has ever asked me that directly.  I sat and thought about an answer to her question.  I started getting all excited about what I would say… then decided to blog it instead of email it.  I wanted to share it with everyone!

If you have browsed around on my website you have read the Nifty Nappy story of how I got started and how I found fitteds.

Why I love fitteds: how about we start with the ABC’s of cloth diapering…

  1. absorbent: The fabrics that they have now days that I make fitteds out of are amazing.  Hemp is 10x’s more absorbent than cotton!  This means less layers so a less bulky diaper.  Bamboo is very absorbent too… and it is anti-bacterial.  So a more absorbent healthier diaper!  Many people use my fitted without a cover. Unless they are headed out and about… or for nights.  I hardly used covers, my little ones just ran around in cute diapers!  **You can read more testimonials here on our Nifty Lovin page under the pics.**
  2. breathable: Because of the fabrics that fitteds are made of the air is allowed to circulate.  This allows some evaporation and less moisture against the baby’s bum… this leads to less rashes and less chance of developing a yeast infection.  Using a wool cover extend this breathability even more!
  3. cute: Come on… fitteds are way cute!  –and super soft too.  I am always being told that people just love how soft my diapers are.  (keeping in mind I have never used any but my own)  One day I got my hands on some other brands of pocket diapers.  WOW!!!  my diapers ARE super soft compared to them  I can see why people would pick fitteds over pockets just on that fact alone.
  4. do-able: I decided to add a ‘D’ to my list.  Do-able… I think that fitteds are more do-able.  There is less that can go wrong with a fitted.  I am of the opinion that mama’s new to cloth are often discouraged when pockets don’t work out for them… when they have to try different configurations and when the baby gets a rash.  They decide cloth diapering isn’t for them, too much of a hassel.  If they had started with fitteds though they wouldn’t have had those issues.  They would have had a positive experience and would be excited to share the outcome with their family and friends in a good light!  Cloth diapering would spread like wild-fire!!!!

So there you have it.  Not too over the top I don’t think but it covers all the bases.  In the end fitteds are just a better diaper.  better for the baby.  better to use!

Happy diapering,

Labor Day Specials

Some of my retailers are having some speacials for Labor Day… make sure to visit the Retailers Specials page to check them out!

We are going just over the mountain to visit with my sister that just moved to CO also.  I am excited to see her.  I also have a little something up my sleeve… more on that later!  :) AND there is a cute little baby shop my sister says I have to visit.  She has already talked to the owner about carrying my diapers.  So a fun filed weekend for us.

What do you have planned?

Hope you all have a fun and safe holiday!

I Went for IT!!!

It was suggested to me that I type up an article and submit it to EzineArticles.

I decided to give it a shot.  I was kinda worried because I don’t type all fancy, I just use everyday words and phrases, and I’m not sure my punctuations are ever correct!

In any event. . . I typed it up, and I submitted it.

GUESS WHAT?

They accepted it.  It is all published.

Have a look see and tell me what you think!

Drinking more. . . peeing MORE!

I know how frustrating it can be when your little one reaches those points along the path of growing up where they start to drink more and then as a result they pee more.   I mean seriously you had everything worked out right?  You had the perfect diaper solution and it was going great. . . then *BAM* one day they are peeing through EVERYTHING!!!!

So what do you do?  Do you get all new diapers?  Do you add more bulk to the existing diapers?  Well, I really can’t answer for other diaper brands, but I do have a few suggestions if you use my cloth diapers.

If you are using my fitted Nifty Nappy and the insert that came with it:

  • you can try to pull the insert toward the front more and then fold it down . . . putting the bulk right where you need it and not all over the diaper. -4th picture in this folding tutorial
  • you can fold your one insert into thirds.  -1st & 2nd picts in this folding tutorial
  • you can add an extra insert.

If you are using my PeachyKeen Pocket when a little one starts to pee more really fast sometimes the microfleece will not wick fast enough.  If this is the case and you are having leaking problems with your pocket diapers I would suggest:

  • using the insert as a lay in insert instead of a stuffer.  This will put the absorbency right next to the baby and avoid the wicking problem.
  • adding an extra insert.
  • also implementing any of the folding techniques.

*NOTE: I only suggest this with MY inserts because they are made with bamboo velour and hemp, and can be placed against the baby’s bum . . . there are some fabrics it are not good to place right next to the baby’s behind, so please do your research before you do this with any other brand of inserts.

Along with either of these diapers there is also the option of a wool cover.  I LOVE wool covers, and when my baby reached the point where she was peeing though the pockets, and nothing else would help. . . I didn’t want to bulk up her diaper with extra inserts and make it uncomfortable or possibly difficult for her to move around, so I used a wool cover.  Wool made it so I could still use the pockets, but not bulk them up.  If you have any wool questions please feel free to visit my wool information page.

I really hope that this helps some mama’s out there!

Spending a spare minute!

I have a little time, so I am going to blog…

Spare minutes aren’t very plentiful around here.  So I have to make great use of them when they do surface!

So now what to blog about???

Hummm…..

How about today I will talk about what I want to do for a sewing room!

I am so excited to get all my stuff into one space.  I am going to have shelves for stock! I am very thrilled about the stock part.  Then I will also have a cutting table and a sewing table.  I will have room for all my fabrics to be stored on shelves and not in totes out in the camper trailer.  I want to have some space for my little one to play since all the other kiddos will be in school this year.  I also will have drawers for my threads and my scissors.  I want to have bins to keep my diaper cuts in and drawers for my cut prints.  Also I will make covers for my sewing machines and my serger.   Eventually I will have a sink that is just for washing my woolies too!

So I am really kinda excited!

Is there anything coming up that you are excited about… share with us!

How will I do it?

How will I move and keep selling?  Well… this is where my amazing retailers come into play.  I have been working with them.  They have been building up some stock so that in the down time they will still have diapers to sell.  They are great huh?

Did you know though, that we won’t be moving right into our new home?  Well, we haven’t bought one yet!  So there will be a transition place that we will stay until we decide on a home and purchase it.  During this transition time I will have 6 diaper prints that will be available along with the Bitty Bums and the Heavy Doody.

So how will I take all that with me?  The moving company will be storing all our stuff until we are ready to move it into our home, so anything that we will need during this time we have to take with us.

That would be my fabrics machines and stuff like that.   We have decided a trailer is the way to go.  So this weekend we go to buy a trailer.  Then . . . I have to pull it!  :(  I have never pulled a trailer before, but since I don’t drive stick shift either, and hubby’s truck is a stick.  So, I have to pull the trailer!  Ahhh…. I guess it will be ok, but I am a wee bit nervous.

Have you had to do something that made you all nervous before?

My sewing space now

Do you ever wonder how it all works here?

Well this is how I have been sewing for the last two years…

So what do you think?  Stacks of diaper EVERYWHERE!  can I just say I am sooooo excited to get a room for my sewing!

We cut, we sew, we serge, we sew again, we put on snaps, we stuff, we do up the snaps, we package. . . all at the kitchen table!

Do you have your own space to do your “thing”?  Or do you have to squeeze it in?

to the edge and back again…

I have been to the edge of civilization and back again!  LOL!

Ok, I guess that might be an exaggeration.  We are finally home from house hunting though….

We have a few options so I think it was successful.  The thing I am most excited about it that I WILL have space.  In each of the houses we looked at there is a good space for my sewing stuff.  Also there are a TON of thrift stores around!  maybe my wool searching will be more productive.  Whoo-hoo!

So as for diaper business.  I just got home, but I have diaper I need to get sewn up. Quite a few still actually…  Ahhhhh   -when do I pack?  Oh, this will be fun!

I did get to chat with a gal that works in a Family Food Co-op store.  She seemed to think that the store would be interested in carrying my diapers.  I am getting excited!

so I would love to hear your moving stories….

Have you moved?

Did you have a moving company move you?  -We will this time!  :)

Happy Diapering,

Vilate

What am I looking for?

Well, right now actually I need someone that has a premie.  I want to try my new Bitty Bums out on a premie and see how small they will actually fit.  I would love if they fit great with the folding and I can sell them as a premie and newborn cloth diaper.

Do you know any one that has a premie that would be willing to give my cloth a try?

On another note… We are going house hunting this weekend.  Wish me luck!

Also don’t forget to check out the Retailer Specials for a HUGE announcement!

Heads UP!

So what is new now?  Well, I am moving…

My family is moving to Colorado.  We are currently living in Utah on a farm by Grandma and Grandpa.  Why move then?  Well… Hubs job is going to end soon.  We knew when we moved here it was only for a few years, but it is still hared to say goodbye and move away.  I am excited a little bit about the move though.

Cloth Diapers are a hard sale in Utah!  It might be our (I was born here) tight purse strings, or our quick rejection of the “new” things.  It might also be our “crafty” side…cause, “I can make that” or “my grandma can knit me some“.  Any way it falls, it has been hard to convert Utahns to Cloth Diapers.  I can’t wait to get all moved and see how they go over in CO!

My dream is to open up a Brick and Mortar shop someday.  I would love to sell all things Cloth Diapers!

So what about you?  Are you all alone in your cloth diapering choice where you live?

Have you managed to convert anyone?  I’d love to hear your stories!

P.S.  Also still testing out this twitter thing… did you see this post tweeted on twitter?
