Repairing a hole in a Woolie

I try really hard to look for holes in the sweaters I buy to upcycle, but once in awhile I miss one.  More often than not though holes just develop over time.  I thought I would do a post on how to repair a hole in a woolie.

When I repair a hole in wool I just stitch it up.  Sounds easy right?  Well it really is.  I have shared this video with a few people that have contacted me and asked.   It is not my video so you just get a link.

I hope this helps a few of you out.  As always if you have any more questions don’t hesitate to ask.

my affair with Fitteds…

I know it is no secret that I prefer fitteds.  Anyone that is a frequent visitor to my facebook page knows my opinion.  One of my fans is having issues with a used pocket she bought… in trying to help her through it I suggested she change to fitteds.

Today thought I got an email.  She point-blank asked me why I like fitteds.  I don’t know if anyone has ever asked me that directly.  I sat and thought about an answer to her question.  I started getting all excited about what I would say… then decided to blog it instead of email it.  I wanted to share it with everyone!

If you have browsed around on my website you have read the Nifty Nappy story of how I got started and how I found fitteds.

Why I love fitteds: how about we start with the ABC’s of cloth diapering…

  1. absorbent: The fabrics that they have now days that I make fitteds out of are amazing.  Hemp is 10x’s more absorbent than cotton!  This means less layers so a less bulky diaper.  Bamboo is very absorbent too… and it is anti-bacterial.  So a more absorbent healthier diaper!  Many people use my fitted without a cover. Unless they are headed out and about… or for nights.  I hardly used covers, my little ones just ran around in cute diapers!  **You can read more testimonials here on our Nifty Lovin page under the pics.**
  2. breathable: Because of the fabrics that fitteds are made of the air is allowed to circulate.  This allows some evaporation and less moisture against the baby’s bum… this leads to less rashes and less chance of developing a yeast infection.  Using a wool cover extend this breathability even more!
  3. cute: Come on… fitteds are way cute!  –and super soft too.  I am always being told that people just love how soft my diapers are.  (keeping in mind I have never used any but my own)  One day I got my hands on some other brands of pocket diapers.  WOW!!!  my diapers ARE super soft compared to them  I can see why people would pick fitteds over pockets just on that fact alone.
  4. do-able: I decided to add a ‘D’ to my list.  Do-able… I think that fitteds are more do-able.  There is less that can go wrong with a fitted.  I am of the opinion that mama’s new to cloth are often discouraged when pockets don’t work out for them… when they have to try different configurations and when the baby gets a rash.  They decide cloth diapering isn’t for them, too much of a hassel.  If they had started with fitteds though they wouldn’t have had those issues.  They would have had a positive experience and would be excited to share the outcome with their family and friends in a good light!  Cloth diapering would spread like wild-fire!!!!

So there you have it.  Not too over the top I don’t think but it covers all the bases.  In the end fitteds are just a better diaper.  better for the baby.  better to use!

Closed Up Shop!

Well, we are all closed up now!  Thanks so much for being amazing customers!

I am working on sewing up diapers as fast as I can.  I have my 2 sewer helpers sewing 24/7!   Well… not literally–  LOL!

I do know that a few of my retailers have bought quite a bit of stock… so watch for it to show up in a their shops in a couple weeks.

I do know one way or another this will not be the end of Nifty Nappy cloth diapers. Don’t worry you may very well see some in the future.  I have a few things on the table that I have to consider and decide what direction I want to go.  I will keep you updated in future newsletters and blog posts.

Thanks again for being a part of the Nifty Nappy ‘family’.  I have loved getting to know you and seeing your cute little ones in pictures.  Keep them coming.  I enjoy seeing cute babies in cute cloth!

Please continue to refer to my website for information and don’t hesitate to ask questions.  I want to stay involved!

Thanks again for all you have done for me and my family!

Happy diapering,

Vilate

Thanks for caring!

Wow… what a two months we have had, huh?!  Memories, photos, giveaways… it has been so much fun!

Thanks for helping me to make my last few months of selling cloth diapers great!

I also appreciate your patience as I have been trying to keep orders straight… who won what giveaways… and get it all done.  You have been great about it all.  I know I have the most amazing fans.  :)  I have been told that many times.  People can not believe how great you guys are.  They don’t understand why I have a connection with you.  They can’t see the “family” we have!  Thanks for being a part of NN’s family!  We love you!

Please continue to be pacient with me… and with the retailers.  They have no control over when the diapers will go out.  At this point I am making all diaper for orders that have been places… we WAYYYY are beyond stock!  We are sewing and snapping as fast as we can.  But we don’t want to rush and send out diaper that aren’t 100% GREAT!

Please don’t think this is the last you will hear of Nifty Nappy either!  I have some fun ideas… as many of you saw on the facebook page… care of stuff for your diapers.  I am excited to be able to help people get clean diapers and yummy wool covers!

I have a few other ideas up my sleeve… and the NN diapers might evenutally resurface in one form or another in the future.  We will see how the world turns!

Thanks again for the great “out with a BANG!”  You guys are great!  Please keep the pictures coming on the facebook page.  I love to see them… and I will still be around to help in any way or to answer cloth diapering questions if I can.  So… keep diapering!

Happy Diapering,

Vilate

I LOVE the Cloth Diapering Community!!!

I have been so overwhelmed with your support and love for my diapers. It has been such a fun month. I have been so blessed to associate with all of you.

On the day I announced we were closing up shop my website had 976 hits! That is amazing!! I am so happy that you like my diapers… and that you all want to get some.

I am working double time to get your orders out… I am so thankful you are all so patient with me. I know I really appreciate your patience right now and I am sure my retailers do to. My retailer have been amazing though this… some even offering layaway plans so everyone can get the diapers they want. I applaud them! They have really gone the extra mile for me and for you. They deserves a huge thanks! Next time you are on one of their facebook pages… remember to thank them. And please do be patient with them… they can’t send out diapers if I haven’t shipped them out yet. LOL! I am working as hard as I can to get your diapers done and out in an orderly fashion. I have hubby snapping diapers every night too. We are all diapers here!

There are only 10 days left!!! and then I am not taking any more orders. Feb. 10, 2011 is the cut off date to get your orders in for a Nifty Nappy.

I still have some things in the works… and when they are more final I will let you all know!

Thanks so much for all your support! I am so happy you all love Nifty Nappy so much.

the beginning of the end….

A year ago I had no idea how far I would have come… I would have laughed to think I had 14 amazing retailers and a waiting list of 20 more. Thanks to my amazing customers though that is where we began this new year. There were times when I had more work than I could handle and I got backlogged.. you guys were amazingly forgiving of my human-ness.

I am so very, VeRy, VERY sad to have to sit down and write out this post.
I don’t know if you guys have heard about the CPSIA ruling… but it puts me out of business!
It is regulations for lead testing for items for children under the age of 12. I would have to send my diapers in for lead testing to a third party every time I use a a new batch of snaps or PUL. At $40 a pop I can’t afford that. Plus I would have to have a tag on it that states the date, the batch, the lot #, the manufacturer, and contact info. I would have to keep track of each diaper I made… and when I used a different fabric it would be a different lot # and different snaps or PUL would b a different batch #. Sounds confusing? Well it is.. I am not very business oriented and I would have a hard time keeping track of all this… plus the tag would have to be like HUGE. :(
I can barely keep up as it is now ladies without all this added on!
I can’t speak for others out there that are WAHM’s… but I can’t just ignore the law. Some will choose to, some don’t even know about it, and some will manage to comply, but some that will be the end of.
I was so excited with were we were going! I had new products… care of products… soap nuts, a lanolizing potion, wool dryer balls, training pants.  I even have some new fabrics too.
You all know how much I LOVE my diapers… and my retailers … and my CUSTOMERS.
This is so hard for me to do. BUT in the end… I think it may be a good thing for my family.  My hubby is pretty burnt out on snapping diapers for hours a night. And my kiddos don’t get to have things made by mama cause mama is always too busy. So maybe a blessing in disguise? I am trying to look at it that way or else I wouldn’t make it through this.
I get all teary eyed when I think about not making diapers… not getting any more cute pics of your adorable little ones in their diapers… about loosing some amazing friends I have made in the cloth diapering community.
I hope that last part doesn’t happen… I plan on sticking around… Nifty Nappy will still be here.. just not in the same way. I do have some ideas rolling around in my head. I just will not be making and selling diapers anymore.
I plan on keeping my FB page… and my webpage… only there will be some changes of course… but I will keep promoting cloth diapers!

****** So the details? a month… that is how long we have… *******
on Feb. 10th I will stop selling my diapers.. (retailers may still have some in stock… but I will not take more orders after the 10th)
That gives you a month… if you have put off buying a Nifty Nappy diaper put it off no more or your chance my be gone!!!

Over the next month I will try to have some fun giveaways and stuff!!! Watch for sales from retailers and such!
I want to go out with a BANG!!! Can you help me do this? I need this to be a fun time… I need to not think about what I am letting go. :(

Thanks so much for all your support!  I am so happy you all love Nifty Nappy so much.

Happy Diapering,

Vilate

OBV or OCV? To change or not to change?

I know that change is hard, but sometimes it is good right?
I have been considering this change for awhile… and the opportunity is good to act right now.

What do you think of Organic COTTON velour? I am thinking of switching from Organic Bamboo Velour (OBV) to Organic Cotton Velour (OCV) .

I made some tester diapers and inserts with it. And had them tested. The only diapers I would use it in would be the Organic diapers. And I would use it in ALL the inserts. There are not more testing slots. These have been tested.

The testers said that the cotton velour spread the wetness more evenly… so less leaks. They also said the babies did not feel more wet. They tested the OCV inserts in my regular fitted which will not change… they tested the OCV inserts in the pockets which will not change. The change will be in the inserts.  ALL inserts! This will be an all or nothing change… I can not afford to go both.

Why the change? Price is one! The price of the OBV keeps going up… If I stay with it I will have to raise my prices.
Reason two the OCV is made here in the USA! I love that. Also the process to make it is less harsh. You can read this by the Federal Trade Commission

So… what do you think? I know what I want to do… I want to go with the OCV but I know you use these diapers and hopefully love them. I want your opinion!

We are growing tooo FAST!!!

I know that is odd to hear, but we are!

I am not a factory and it is hard to keep up.  I have brought in a few other mama’s around the area here to help, but it is still alot to keep up with.  The cutting takes hours, and then the sewing can be split up, but then the snapping comes back to us, and we (hubby and I) snap diapers for at least 2 hrs every night!!!

It frustrates me that I am always putting off helping my customers and that orders are taking so long to get out.  So I have a few questions for you guys.  Maybe this will help me decide what I need to do.

Thanks for your patience with me, and thanks for being such great customers… you make us who we are.

Happy Diapering,

Do you tweet? Did you know that is an action word now? LOL!

Well if you do I have a great announcement!

This week on @EcoChicParties: Join @RDAHeatherMc of @RealDiapers and our party sponsors to help kick off the 2nd annual 100% Reusable Cloth Diapers Photo Contest with the RDA. Have you heard of the RDA yet? The RDA is a non-profit organization working to promote the use of reusable cloth diapers in the US and Canada.   Last year they held a fabulous photo contest and the 12 winning photographs were featured in their 2010 RDA Calendar.   Since it was such a HUGE success, the RDA is going to continue the traditon and we are helping them kick off the 2nd annual photo contest!

Prizes this week include cloth diaper packages from @myNiftyNappy, @TheWillowStore, and @GrowinGreenBums (all proud RDA business partners and members).   - the RDA advocates for cloth diapers in the US AND
in Canada. This contest however, is open only to US residents because they
can’t find a Canadian lawyer to help them with the rules :(

Join us Tuesday night (10/19) and learn how your baby can become one of the next 12 babies/tots featured in the 2011 RDA calendar. You will also learn more about the wonderful work that the Real Diapers do to help promote reusable cloth diapers. SAY CHEESE!

Also EcoChick offers Twitter info: NEW TO TWITTER? Many of you have jumped into Twitter just for our weekly parties and really don’t know much about the wonderful features! Since parties can move rather quickly Robin has offered up her time the hour before the party (8-9pm ET) to provide #PARTYTRAINING. Be sure to follow @EcoChicSidekick for the hour of open twitter help and tutorials. You’ll be a pro in no time! No RSVP is required – just show up and tweet!

You can also ask me any questions you might have. I would be glad to answer…. You DO NOT have to attend the twitter party to enter the photo contest.

I can’t wait to see you all there!
