Post 1-Fabric choices

I decided to do a few posts about the fabrics I use and why I use them… I hope you will learn something along the way.

Microfleece:

Microfleece is not the same as other fleeces.  I realize it must be confusing for some people to find out I use this microfleece.  Fleece=water resistant to lots of people.  Normal fleece is water resistant.  This is why you can use fleece for cloth diaper covers.  Polar fleece and Windpro fleece work great for these.  But microfleece is a different fabric.  It isn’t water resistance but it isn’t necessarily absorbent either.  So how does it work?  Well it is a synthetic fabric and it is made to pull the moisture into and through the fibers.  It isn’t made to absorb the moisture.  This is why I use it as the first layer in my diaper.  It is a wicking fabric…. wicking means: to draw the moisture away from the body.  So the baby pees on the diaper and then the moisture wicks away from the bum into another fabric.  Brilliant right?  You better believe it!  I can’t take credit for it though… many have used this before me.  I did research though to find a good wicking fabric.

Besides the fact that it works it is very soft!  Even after lots of washes it is still soft.  I am also very picky about the color that I use.  I try to not use white… I have some and I will make an all white diaper if requested for blessings, baptisms, and such but I would rather not use it all the time.  I really like the yellow color that I have been using.  It hides stains pretty well, and doesn’t look too dingy after time.  We all want a fresh looking cloth diaper right?

So what happens after the moisture is wicked away?

Well….that is another blog post!  :)

Happy diapering,

Great explanation! Often it is difficult to understand different fabric properties if you haven’t done your own research and I sure haven’t!
